US Open of Surfing
So, I went to the US open of surfing in Huntington beach to see some good surfing. The final heat delivered and Nathaniel Curran took the win putting him in the WQS rating lead, which means he's got a pretty good shot at the pro tour next year. And that's what I expected to see surfing.
What I didn't expect, was the sheer mas of bikes which descended upon Huntington Beach, most of them beach cruisers. Looking at the pictures I took many of them looked more like something out of Amsterdam than the US.
Lots of interesting bikes on display. there was this fixie sporting matching argyle seat and top tube pad, the official Gramin ironic coffee bike.
There was this cruiser thing with what may be the most unride able looking geometry I have ever seen. Note the seat height in relation to the handle bars
And a mint condition Schwin colegeate

New wheels
Just got these new, Mavic Ksyrium SL Premium wheels on my bike and they're freakin awesome especially since I didn't pay for them, bike blogging rules! They make my bike like half a pound lighter. Breaking also feels a little smother, with a little added stopping power. Plus they look sick.

It seems I've been tagged- or maybe not
It seems I've been tagged by Bike snob, well he linked to me in a post where he tagged some people, so just to be on the safe side. Like a guy ridding a recumbent in a chicken suit, I'm going to roll with it.
So these question were created by fat cyclist and like snob said, he's like the patron saint of bike blogging or something. So since fatty tagged snob and snob seemed to tag me (maybe) here my best efforts to avoid a blogging life of ruin, just to be safe.
If you could have any one — and only one — bike in the world, what would it be?
the Hoffmann bike
Do you already have that coveted dream bike? If so, is it everything you hoped it would be? If not, are you working toward getting it? If you’re not working toward getting it, why not?
yes, no, maybe, sure, there's always a better bike out there and money doesn't grow on trees ya know.
If you had to choose one — and only one — bike route to do every day for the rest of your life, what would it be, and why?
the one I ride to work, because I'll be doing it either way.
What kind of sick person would force another person to ride one and only one bike ride to to do for the rest of her / his life?
Chris Carmichael?
Do you ride both road and mountain bikes? If both, which do you prefer and why? If only one or the other, why are you so narrowminded?
yes
Have you ever ridden a recumbent? If so, why? If not, describe the circumstances under which you would ride a recumbent.
No, maybe in a chicken suit.
Have you ever raced a triathlon? If so, have you also ever tried strangling yourself with dental floss?
no, I have a fear of drop nose saddles
Suppose you were forced to either give up ice cream or bicycles for the rest of your life. Which would you give up, and why?
ice cream, but then when would I get to ride the ironic orange julius bike
What is a question you think this questionnaire should have asked, but has not? Also, answer it.
why did I have a flat tire this morning? because my tube had a hole in it
You’re riding your bike in the wilderness (if you’re a roadie, you’re on a road, but otherwise the surroundings are quite wilderness-like) and you see a bear. The bear sees you. What do you do?
stop and ask it if it would like a cup of tea.
ok now for the tagging part,

pinch flat news
copenhagen cycle chic

or maybe I haven't been tagged. Damn this blogging thing is confusing sometimes, so he linked to me does that count?

Bike Route Badly Needed
Stretching from San Clement CA to Oceanside CA there are only two roads which you can ride to get from one town to the next. Separated by a military base sandwiched between the Pacific ocean and the Ortega mountain range. You can ride on camp Pendleton on the weekends, sometimes if there isn't a security alert and you have your ID. But if the guards aren't letting anyone on the base you have no access to the military roads and therefore must ride on the highway if you are going south. There if a bike lane seperate of the high way for part of the trip but once that ends you have go go on military roads or risk your life ridding on the 5 freeway. This is ubsurd the, a seprate bike route, adjacent to the highway needs to be built, I don't care if there is a fence the whole way down, just build it!

Floyd Landis & his bike
Ran into Floyd Landis today at Laguna Cyclery. He just got back from I ride and let me get a few photos of him and his bike. Pretty nice looking machine. I asked him if he was thinking about getting back into racing and he just replied enthusiastically "I don't know, well see what happens" He seemed like a man content just to be out ridding on a sunny day in Laguna beach.
Trendyness
fixed gear bikes have no become soo trendy that even skate board company's are putting their names on them. Nice looking bike though.

Tales of Carnage from the open Road
I was hanging out at the LBS, Sunday afternoon. Enjoying a frosty cold brew and watching the Tour (yeah that's right I get served beer at my LBS) and then in walked this wounded warrior of the open road. With a horribly warped front wheel and some scrapes and bruises. His story was, "I was ridding on PCH (Pacific Coast Highway, more a main road than a highway really) and a car drifted into me, knocked me over the sent my bike into a parked car"
He had some minor scrapes on his leg and shoulder but it seems it was the bike that took the real beating. The lesson to learned form all this, CLAIM YOUR LANE! ride right down the middle or the road if you have to. I ride the same rout as this kid to work everyday and he could have avoided this by taking the lane. Lucky the shop has some used older spare wheels just for this type of occasion and got him back on the road with a older cheaper (actually just an older hand built road wheel, pretty nice realy) wheel in about 15 minuets.

Electirc Time Trail Bike
This just in, electronic shifting could make aero bars somewhat more useful for situations other than racing. That's right look closely at the picture, and you will see that you can now shift and brake from the same hand position! Yes you read it right, this basic functionality found on all other bikes equipped with shifter and brakes is now available on bikes with aero bars and electronic shifting, the world is better place.
